The Hero Our Pets Need: Stephen Knight Wins CNN Hero of the Year for Fostering Pets While Owners Seek Treatment

A major barrier for many pet owners who are seeking treatment for a substance use or process addiction disorder (like alcohol, drug, or gambling addiction) is their inability to find a foster or sitter for their pet while they are receiving rehabilitation. For those enrolled in an outpatient treatment program, it is a little easier, but a sitter may still be needed. For patients that would like a higher level of care (i.e. inpatient treatment), it can be virtually impossible without a foster.

Stephen Knight, the founder of the nonprofit Dogs Matter, has volunteered his time to assist those who would like to seek treatment by providing foster care for dogs while their owners get the help they need. Because of this, he has been awarded CNN's Hero of the Year for 2024.

Dogs Matter provides foster services for dogs while their owners receive treatment for their addictions. Since 2015, the organization has helped over 1,200 wonderful dogs and their owners. To help with his charity and the amazing work he has done, CNN has decided to donate $100,000 to his organization so he can continue to help owners and their pets during such a difficult time.

An Alternative: In-Home Treatment and Pets

While finding a foster for your pet may be imperative if you sign up for inpatient or even outpatient rehabilitation, there is actually another option for many pet owners that require addiction support for their substance use or process addiction disorder—in-home treatment.

Front Door Health offers the same quality of care you would receive at an inpatient facility, all from the comfort of your own home. This means you can continue to meet your pet responsibilities and spend time with your furry friends, all while getting the treatment you need and deserve.
