Valentine's Day Blues: Tips for Staying Positive and Sober


For some, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to express their love and adoration for their significant other. For others, though, it can be a time of stress, anxiety, and even sadness. For those who are new to sobriety or find themselves struggling to stay sober during Valentine’s Day, it can feel like an insurmountable obstacle.


The good news is you have the ability, strength, and fortitude to make it through this holiday without the need for a drink or drug. Here are some helpful tips for staying not only sober but positive during Valentine’s Day:


1.    Host a Valentine’s Day Singles Get Together

 

If you have some local friends who also don’t have a significant other to spend time with on Valentine’s Day, consider hosting a get-together where you can play board games, cook, mix up some mocktails, watch a movie, or partake in any other fun, sober activity. This will allow you to spend time with the people you love without having to worry about running into reminders of the Holiday.


2.    Practice Self-Care


Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show yourself some love. You can do this by practicing self-care. Consider a self-spa day, a nice bath, lighting some candles, ordering in some of your favorite foods, watching your favorite movie, and/or snuggling up with your furry friend. This self-care and self-soothing can help to keep you present and comfortable during the Holiday. 


3.    Be Respectful of Boundaries

 

For those who are in a relationship, it’s important to understand the current state of how things are. While actively drinking or using, it’s very possible that you created strain in your relationship with your significant other. Because of this, they may want some space to breathe and even time apart. While your instinct may be a big romantic gesture over Valentine’s Day, consider if it’s what they would want. At the same time, make sure your boundaries are understood and met.


4.    Seek Support

 

If you are having a particularly tough time (or you suspect you will), consider how you can best receive the support you need. Whether it is from a mental health expert, a loved one, or even a support group, make sure you have someone you can contact should the urge to drink or use over the Holiday become overwhelming.
