Can My Child Stay in College While Receiving Treatment?

College is a time for growth and independence. It’s a place where young adults can find their place in the world and try new things. With that said, “trying new things” can go too far, and “letting off some steam” may become problematic over time.

If you are worried that your child’s drinking and/or drug use is leading them down a dangerous road, consider the information below to better determine if your child is going through a phase, if they need professional support, and what treatment option may be available for your child that allows them to stay in college and receive the care they need.

College and Experimentation

Many teens and young adults experiment with different substances in college. This may include underage drinking, marijuana use, and more. There’s no way to prevent this entirely. While you can warn your child before they head off to college, ultimately, they are now legal adults and will use their newfound freedom to not always make the best decisions.

With that said, there is a difference between “experimentation” and a substance use disorder…

Does My College-Age Child Have a Problem?

If your child is showing the following signs of addiction, they may need professional support:

·      Mood swings

·      Falling grades

·      Withdrawing from relationships and activities

·      Poor hygiene

·      Hanging out with a different crowd

·      Lethargy

·      Lying

With all of this said, it’s important for your child to receive a diagnosis from a mental health professional to determine whether or not they are suffering from a substance use disorder.

Can My Child Stay in College and Receive Treatment?

There is a strong chance that your child can receive the care they need while still meeting their college obligations. With that said, certain forms of treatment will likely require them to take time off school. For instance, inpatient care involves a patient living in a facility with little access to the outside world. This can make attending classes difficult or impossible.

Flexible Treatment with Front Door Health

If your child needs a higher level of care but they don’t want to take time off to receive the care they need and deserve, an option may be available to meet their requirements—in-home care. In-home treatment involves a team of professionals providing care from wherever is most convenient and doesn’t require your child to check into a facility to receive a higher level of care.

If you are considering an in-home treatment provider in the Chicago area for your college-age child, look no further than Front Door Health.
