What Treatment Options Are Available for My Child?

As a loving parent, you want to help your child to succeed in any way you can. Because of this, seeing them go down a difficult path can be anywhere from frustrating to heartbreaking. When it comes to drugs and/or alcohol, there is an added sense of fear and urgency.

Not only do drugs and alcohol put your child’s future at risk, but also their present. Drunk driving, overdose, and many other major consequences can occur as a result of underage drinking and drug use.

While children sometimes want to experiment and rebel, if there are signs of real problematic behavior, you should seek the support of professional, expert mental health and substance use treatment providers.

Once you begin the search, you’ll be met with three treatment options…

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is intensive and will remove your child from their current environment. This can be both good and bad. While it may remove some of the temptations and ensure they aren’t hanging out with the same crowd, it also isolates them. It can massively disrupt their studies and their school year, as well. Many inpatient treatment centers do not offer a school program, so your child will be missing time and will likely have to make that time back up after treatment.

Outpatient Treatment

While outpatient treatment allows students to continue to go to school, it can be very disruptive. Having to go from school to a treatment facility and then back home can be exhausting and difficult. It puts a strain on their ability to focus on their education and their treatment. It also can make it difficult for your child to get their homework done.

In-Home Treatment

One option that many parents don’t know is available is in-home treatment. With this form of treatment, your child can continue to go to school as usual and come back home afterward. Once they are home, they are able to meet with mental health professionals and treatment specialists to receive a high level of care and support.

The integration of treatment and the home environment allows your child to heal while they are at home and allows the entire family to learn skills that help to ensure the home is a healthy environment for the child to recover.

Remember: whether it is outpatient or inpatient, your child will eventually need to return home permanently afterward. Why not skip that step and instead offer treatment to your child from the comfort of their own home?
