Top Tips for Practicing Mindfulness
If you are stressed or overstimulated often, you may be looking for a way to not only calm yourself down but regulate your emotions. One of the best ways to lower your levels of stress and get through difficult moments is to practice mindfulness.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the act of being fully present and in the moment without judging your thoughts or feelings. While this may sound passive, it actually requires a conscious decision to focus on the moment and let go of what is causing your distress.
With that said, mindfulness is also something you can practice daily to lower overall anxiety levels and be better prepared when high levels of stress hit.
Top Tips for Practicing Mindfulness
Below are some top tips for practicing mindfulness in your daily life:
Meditate
Meditation is the perfect way to take a step back from the past and future and live in the now. Whether you choose guided meditation or you prefer to simply sit and exist, meditation is a helpful practice. Just make sure you acknowledge your thoughts and feelings as they come up, then let them pass without judgment.
Find Sensory Items You Love
One great way to get centered is through sensory objects. This may be a candle with a scent you love, a soft blanket, or even a pet! Essentially, anything that provides you with a positive sensory experience can serve as an amazing tool to bring you into the moment and de-stress.
Focus on Your Breathing
Even if you aren’t looking to enter a meditative state, you can still focus on your breathing to slow things down and be more present in the moment. One great mindfulness practice is to go for a walk and focus on your breathing as you walk. This way, you get fresh air and exercise while you calm your nerves!
Be Mindful Daily
Mindfulness is something you can and should practice. Even if you aren’t stressed, daily mindfulness will help you to build up the skill of being in the moment. The better you get at it, the easier it will be to practice mindfulness when things get tough.
