5 Fun Things You Can Do Sober!

A major concern of many people that are in early sobriety is that they’ll get bored. For many people addicted to substances, substance use is simply part of whatever they do. Whether it’s the beach or a bar, a drink or drug is a must. When the use of substances stops, it can be difficult to imagine an enjoyable, fun-filled life without being under the influence.

The good news is, there are lots of fun things to do sober! Just because you’re sober, doesn’t mean you have to be bored…

Below are 5 fun things that you can do while you are sober!

#1: Take Classes

Now is a great time to learn a new skill and start a new hobby. There are a lot of things that people intend to get around to, but either don’t have the time or money due to their substance use. As you won’t be spending money on substances, you can put that money towards fun classes!

Consider:

·      Painting

·      Music

·      Dance

·      Yoga

·      Photography

·      Pottery

There are a ton of possibilities!

#2: Spend Some Time Outdoors

If you love nature, early sobriety is the perfect time to get out there and reconnect with the world around you. Consider a beautiful nature hike, camping, swimming, or simply hanging out at the beach. Bring some friends or family members with you that don’t drink or use other substances or are willing to not do so while around you. This is a great way to reconnect, build bonds, and rebuild trust with loved ones.

#3: Join a Martial Arts Gym

Martial Arts are the perfect way to learn a new skill, get some exercise, and let out aggression. It’s always good to have a positive outlet for your feelings, and for those in early sobriety, there are a lot of feelings that need to be expressed.

Some martial arts you can consider include:

·      Muay Thai

·      BJJ

·      Karate

·      Taekwondo

·      Judo

·      Wrestling

While you can take classes without any contact, it’s fun to take some classes that involve hitting a bag or some pads. This allows you to go all out and release your aggression in a safe and healthy way.

#4: Go on Tours

No matter how long you’ve been living in your area, there’s a good chance you haven’t fully explored it. This is especially so in a big city! Look up some fun tours (that aren’t built around drinking). You’ll get to experience your area in a new way, meet some new people, and get out of the house for a bit.

#5: Join a Meetup

For just about any hobby, there is a Meetup group. Comics, bowling, movies, art…just about anything you can think of!

Look for a fun, activity-based Meetup where you can get to know others and get out of your own head for a bit. Just make sure beforehand that it isn’t a Meetup at a bar or where there will be a lot of drinking.

Get Support with Freedom

If you are either in early sobriety or you are looking to quit the use of a substance, you may be considering treatment options. Most of these options involve checking into a treatment center where you are unable to leave and experience the world around you.
