4 Things You Can Regain When You Get Sober

It can be easy for those getting sober to focus on all of the things they lost. Many people with substance use disorders make poor decisions while under the influence, which leads to major consequences.

While getting sober doesn’t fix everything, there are a lot of amazing things that those in treatment regain!

Below are 4 things you can regain when you get sober…

1.    Self-Esteem

Addiction can greatly diminish the self-esteem and confidence of those suffering from the disease. Many people make decisions while drinking or using drugs that they wouldn’t make sober. This can lead those suffering from addiction to believe they are bad people, and not just people making bad decisions. This, in turn, leads to lower self-esteem.

By stopping the use of drugs and alcohol, we find patients see a boost in their self-esteem. They are able to see clearly and make better decisions, which builds their confidence and pride over time.

Remember: you are NEVER too far gone. You are worthy and you deserve happiness. You aren’t the decisions you made while under the influence. Front Door Health is here to help you to rebuild your self-esteem and confidence with the help of top professionals in the fields of mental health and substance use disorder treatment.

2.    Friends and Family

While it’s not guaranteed that everyone will forgive and forget, many find that—once they stop the use of substances—their family and friends are willing to return to their lives and give them another chance. By not only stopping the use of the substance or substances but also putting in the work to make lasting change, many patients find their friends and family are willing to not only return but also support them on their journey.

3.    Work Opportunities

While some patients are able to maintain a job while actively suffering from addiction, others are not so lucky. It can be difficult to meet work obligations and grow in a career when drinking or using substances.

In sobriety, many patients find new work opportunities open up for them. Even if they haven’t lost their current job, sobriety helps many to advance their career by being able to focus on their tasks and show up when they are needed.

4.    Peace of Mind

One of the most important things those in sobriety regain is peace of mind. There is no longer any worry about blacking out and waking up in strange places, ending up in the hospital, overdosing, destroying relationships, and more.

The freedom patients feel when it comes to being in control of their minds and bodies at all times creates peace of mind that is indescribable. While early sobriety has its challenges and cravings, the ability to make rational, sober decisions is a priceless gift.
