4 Super Helpful Tips for Dating in Sobriety
Dating, in general, can be a nightmare.
If you are like most people, you get nervous before dates. If you don’t drink, there are even more considerations that can put you on edge.
You may feel self-conscious about not drinking on your date. You also may be concerned that dating without alcohol will be difficult and even nerve-racking, since there is no longer something to “take the edge off.”
So, how do people do it? How do you date sober?
Below are 4 tips to improve your dating life in sobriety…
4 Super Helpful Tips for Dating in Sobriety
Feel free to try all of these tips or mix and match. As long as you are putting yourself out there and staying sober, you’re taking the right steps to find your significant other!
1. Choose a Sober Date Spot
This is key to your success. The last things you want are to have to worry about being surrounded by alcohol and feeling pressured to drink during your date.
This doesn’t mean you can’t go somewhere that serves alcohol. Most restaurants have a beer and wine menu. There is a difference between going to an Italian restaurant with a wine menu and going to a craft brewery that serves food, though.
Some ideas for sober date spots include:
· A coffee shop
· The zoo
· A museum
· The movies
· The park for a picnic
· A boat on the water
Some of these are also low-to-no cost and allow you to better get to know the person you are on a date with.
2. Meditate Beforehand
Breathe. Both on and before your date. Meditating can help to center you and get you in the right headspace for your date. Focus on being calm and relaxed and breathe out the stress you are feeling.
3. Have a Funny Photo Ready
This is a real pro tip that many people don’t know about…
Have a funny photo or meme ready on your phone that makes you laugh or smile. Then, when you get nervous before your date, take a look at the photo! Just make sure you aren’t looking at your phone during the date itself!
4. Date People That Don’t Drink a Lot
This is very important. You don’t have to date someone that is sober, but it also may not be the best idea to go on dates with people who drink heavily, weed smokers, or drug users. Someone that has a drink every once in a while, or a glass of wine on your date, is okay. Someone that gets drunk on your date or drinks a ton, though, may put a lot of strain on your sobriety.
If you go somewhere with alcohol, let your date know you don’t want to drink on the date. You can tell them you don’t feel comfortable drinking on a date or provide them with a plausible excuse. If they keep pushing you, they may not be the best match for you romantically.
One thing you should consider checking is the amount of drinking they are doing on their dating profile (if you are using a dating app). Do they have a drink in their hand in most or all of their photos? This may be a red flag to consider.
