How Our Environment Impacts the Healing and Recovery Process

July 29, 2022

Your environment can greatly impact your ability to heal.

There are certain spaces that detract from the ability to recover. Often, these environments can be avoided. Other times, a space needs to be adjusted to strengthen your ability to improve and grow.

In order to avoid unhealthy environments and make adjustments to settings that have become toxic (like the home), it’s important to understand how your environment impacts your ability to heal and recover. From there, you can make positive, healthy changes.

Below are some of the ways your environment impacts the recovery process, and what can be done to improve your environment to increase your chances of long-term sobriety.

Levels of Stress

During recovery (especially early recovery), it’s important to create a peaceful and low-stress environment. While it’s impossible to eliminate stress completely, avoiding people, places, and things that trigger feelings of anxiety can help to create a healthy healing space.

Beyond avoiding stress, finding a peaceful environment to relax and unwind can be very helpful in creating a sense of mindfulness and serenity.

Temptation

In early sobriety, it can feel like temptation is everywhere! With that said, the better you can avoid temptation, the better the chances are that you won’t give in and relapse.

It’s best to avoid environments that make it difficult to focus on recovery. For instance, being in a bar can trigger cravings and impact the recovery process. The same goes for spending time with friends and even family members that contribute to target behaviors.

By surrounding yourself with positive people and avoiding places and situations in which drug or alcohol use is abundant, you greatly improve your chances of success.

Productivity

For those that drank or used at home, the home environment may feel unproductive at best, and triggering at worst. It’s important that your home feels like a place of healing, comfort, and growth.

In order to change your at-home environment, it is helpful to transition your home into a productive and restorative space. By receiving treatment at home, you can greatly improve your at-home environment and transition the space from one of distress to one of healing.
