Do Interventions Work?

Do Interventions Work?

It’s likely you’ve either seen an intervention show on TV or at least heard of interventions. The concept is the loved ones of someone suffering from an addiction or behavioral health condition surprise them and encourage them to get treatment through a “tough love” approach. This often involves reading letters full of accusations and delivering ultimatums.

The theory is to pressure the person suffering from a substance use disorder into treatment by hitting them with a “shock and awe” campaign. But does this work? And what other options are there?

Do Interventions Work?

Interventions are difficult to properly coordinate and are often done without the help of a trained mental health professional. While sometimes they do encourage a person with a substance use disorder to acknowledge their disorder and seek treatment, it can also backfire. These exchanges can be emotionally charged and even dangerous to the person with the disorder. It can trigger anger and resentment, which can make it even more difficult to encourage the person to seek treatment in the future.

What is the Front Door Health Approach?

So, what can you do? Your loved one is suffering, and you want them to stop using substances that are wreaking havoc on their lives. There is an alternative to interventions that offers treatment options without threats or confrontations…

Front Door Health provides family services that involve the loved ones of a person suffering from substance use disorder sitting down with the person and having a helpful dialogue under the supervision of a trained professional. During this meeting, an assessment of the condition of the patient and recommendations can be provided in a healthy and safe way. There is no surprise visit with our approach, either. We ensure the potential patient is aware and is open to having a discussion. This allows everyone involved to engage in a healthy and helpful dialogue without robbing the person with the substance use disorder of their agency.

From there, our team is able to discuss options and provide recommendations.

Front Door Health offers in-home treatment for patients with dual diagnosis and behavioral disorders. We take a scientific approach to treatment, and we create custom treatment plans for our patients to increase their chances of success.
