Mindfulness Techniques for Recovery: 3 Daily Techniques to Help You Stay Grounded

Life can be really stressful. This is especially so in early sobriety, where emotions are all over the place and even the smallest thing can seem like a world-ending event. Even later on in recovery, difficult times arrive that require an immediate and calming solution.

Below are 3 daily mindfulness techniques that will help you stay grounded and can even help with distress tolerance (should you find yourself in a particularly tough moment).

1.    Meditation

Meditation is a no-brainer. No, really. Many forms of meditation are intended to bring you out of yourself, help you turn off your brain, and encourage you to focus on something calming—even if that’s nothing at all. Sure, you’ll still have thoughts during meditation, but the goal is to allow those thoughts and let them pass without judgment. Over time, a sense of calm reaches you and lightens the load.

Meditation is free, and you can use it every day!

2.    Sensory Objects

Sensory objects are not only great for simply providing yourself with a deeper sense of calm, but also a really powerful tool when it comes to distress tolerance. Consider a candle with your favorite scent, a soft blanket, a stuffed animal, or even a real-life pet! Sensory objects help you to calm yourself in the moment and connect with comfort in a physical way.

3.    Intentional Observation

What does this mean? Well, essentially observing the world in a purposeful way. This is best done while out on a walk or spending time in nature, but it can really be done anywhere.

An example is going outside and really paying attention to everything around you (besides your phone). Notice the way the leaves blow in the breeze, the feeling of that breeze on your skin, the smells it brings. Notice the colors of the sky, the feeling of sunshine, and the noises around you.

This will help to center you and bring you back to the “real world,” allowing you to experience some well-deserved peace.
